Best Tips for Moving with Pets
#1 Update Your Pet's Information
Update Microchip Information
If your pet is microchipped, make sure the information is updated with your new address and contact information. This is crucial in case your pet gets lost during the move. Moving can be stressful, especially for your pet, and they may be more likely to get lost during this time. Having all of their information updated will give you peace of mind and help to ensure that they are returned safely.
Update ID Tags
Ensure your pet's ID tags have your new address and phone number. Even if you don’t have time to get a new tag, you can grab a temporary tag and fill out your new information so everything will be updated. If a pet is lost, the first thing that most people check for is an ID tag so making sure that your pet’s information is updated and at the very least that your phone number is correct.
#2 Maintain Routine and Familiarity
Keep Routine
Try to stick to your pet's regular routine as much as possible, including feeding times, walks, and playtime. This will help reduce stress and provide a sense of familiarity. When you’re moving, it can be easy to get sidetracked with packing and unpacking so you may want to set a reminder to keep your pet on schedule.
Bring Familiar Items
Bring along your pet's favorite toys, bedding, and other familiar items to help them feel more at home in the new environment. Pets can get anxious when they are in an unfamiliar place but if you keep a few comfort items out for them, they will start to get used to their new space as you get everything unpacked.
#3 Monitor Your Pet's Behavior
Watch for Signs of Stress
Keep an eye on your pet's behavior during and after the move. Signs of stress in pets can include pacing, excessive barking or meowing, hiding, loss of appetite, or aggression. If you notice any concerning behaviors, consult your vet for advice.
Give Them Time to Adjust
Every pet adjusts to a new home at their own pace. Be patient with your pet as they settle into their new surroundings, and provide plenty of love and reassurance during the transition period. You may also want to slowly introduce them to their new surroundings. Exposing them to every new space at once may be overwhelming for them but one new space at a time will ensure that they are adjusting and getting used to their new home.
